Toxic Gas Flow CFD Analysis
Navy Vessel Class: The Australian Government’s $183 billion Naval Shipbuilding Plan incorporates construction of 12 new offshore patrol vessels (Arafura Class) designed to replace Australia’s current Armidale Class and Cape Class Patrol Boats in the provision of maritime security and border control.
Services
In collaboration with the client, Rubicon Associates undertook a steady-state toxic gas flow Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. The CFD analysis also provided coarse, steady-state based information about local high levels of turbulence due to flow around objects.
Scope
- Perform CFD analysis to model the distribution of toxic gases exhausted from the ship under varying wind and ship speed loadings.
- Make recommendations for how to extend these results to ensure gases exhausted do not pose a risk to crew in work areas or within the ship via the ship’s ventilation systems.
- Make recommendations on interpreting other useful information found from these simulations.
Project Outcome
87 CFD simulations were completed. These simulations are designed to inform future action by CASG, enabling effective mitigation of potential noxious gas accumulation.
